Building Regulation Window Manifestation – safety decals for windows and glass doors
You will be familiar with our building regulation window decals as dots or stripes. However, did you know window safety stickers can be produced it many ways? Glass window manifestation can be printed in all colours, or plotted as logo’s, decorative shapes and stripes and even text. Not only do we ensure your window safety stickers meet building regulations, we can advise, design and install to give a comprehensive service for your safety window decals.
What are the options?
To meet building regulations, we are required to add features to transparent glazing which make the window apparent.
There are several rules and conditions with a few exceptions to meet Regulation 14 (1) (b) of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. We’ve simplified things a little on this page.

Bespoke Window Safety Stickers
The most common form of compliance are simple frosted window dots. These are usually added in two rows at 900mm and 1500mm height from the ground and offer a very cost-effective solution.
However, it’s often just as cost-effective to use bespoke, decorative graphics as safety window stickers. Logo’s, decorative graphics or even text can be used. These can be frosted and cut to shape, solid stickers and even a printed frosted film can be applied to give a bespoke “stained glass” effect.
Large panels or logo’s can be used if they meet the building regulations, which is to ensure the graphic bridges the gap between the specified heights (Lowest level 1000mm from the ground and the highest level 1600mm from the ground).

Where Do I Need Window Safety Stickers?
Critical locations include large uninterrupted areas of transparent glazing which form part of the internal or external walls and doors of shops, showrooms, offices, factories, public or other non-domestic buildings.
How do we comply with building regulations?
Window safety stickers or manifestations must contrast with the background in all lighting conditions. Therefore an opaque window sticker or frosted graphic would suffice. These can be in the form of a logo at 150mm high (minimum) or a decorative feature such as broken lines or continuous bands at a minimum of 50mm high.
When using lines of window dots or broken lines, or logo’s or graphics, the bottom row should be positioned between
Bottom Row: between 850mm and 1000mm from the ground and
Top Row: between 1400mm and 1600mm from the ground.
Larger panels of frosted vinyl or window film can be used, or large printed or plotted logo’s that specifically bridge the gap between the lowest level of 850mm and the highest level at 1600mm from the ground.
We can usually advise this during a site survey and then by creating a visual to show how the window safety decals will look in situ.
Do Glazed Doors Need Safety Stickers?
There are a few instances where safety window stickers are not required on glazed doors:
- The glazing is less than 400mm in width between the frames
- Glazing has a rail between 600mm and 1500mm above the floor
- Glass doors with large push-plate or handles on each single pane
- A single pane glazed door with a substantial frame

When are window safety stickers NOT required?
Building regulations state that “a permanent means of indicating large uninterrupted areas of glazing” is necessary to comply. Therefore, this compliance can also be met by using permanent structures to limit the risk of collision with the windows. However, these can be costly.
Decorative transoms or mullions can be used on the glass as these would act in the same way as a self adhesive window film and similar safety window stickers.
Can I Install the Window Stickers Myself?
In many cases where smaller decals are used, you will be able to install the window decals yourself. We can still help you with the survey and advise accordingly.
